It also has 'overdrive' on the gear shift- what position (on or offf) should this be in and finally .next to the gear select box is a red button.what is this for please.

ECT stands for 'Electronically Controlled Transmission.' ECT-S = same as above but indicates the Sport Mode.
I agree with wnyken on the remainder of your question.
The "ECT" button is to change the shifting patterns of the transmission. In the "PWR" mode, the transmission will downshift more readily and stay in the lower gears longer before shifting up, especially under heavy acceleration. As for the overdive, other than when towing or carrying heavy loads, or occasionally when going up or down steep hills, always use the overdrive in the on position. This will give you the use of all of the gears and therefore give you the best mpg. When you turn the overdrive off, it locks out the top gear.

Lastly, the red button you are describing is probably next to the gear shift lever in the housing. There is a cover that belongs on it. It is the "shift lock override" button. As a safety measure, you cannot take the car out of gear without the key being in the on position and your foot on the brake. This allows you to take it out of park when neither is happened. It is used primarly for if you want to put the vehicle in neutral gear for towing purposes. There really isn't any other use for the button.

Hope this helps.

ECT mode on my Soarer Twin turbo (jap import car) used to be maximum power mode. The suspention hardened and lowered, and the gearbox would operate in the best gear for maximum power at all times. To be honest it used to make the car so ferocious it was daft, but fun for cornering! PWR is a slightly tamed down version of ECT, and manual is just normal. That red button, if it has some Japanese writing on it is gearbox release. It you can't start the car but need to release it from park, it doesn't do it. If you press that button it will let you release the gearbox so you can move the stick. Overdrive should be in for on.
