Are you talking about the "line assembly accessory " ticket, (like the one on a new car's window)? Or a title?
Some states require a "continued title", - in other words they won't issue a new title! If this is the case, ou need to find somebody that has a "rustbucket" or wrecked one with a title, and and serial plate (that matches title) which can be put on yours. It isn't too bad an idea to have another car for a "parts car "anyway!
In other states, you pay a fee to have a title search, and a new title issued for the car. It helps to have a bill of sale for the car, or at least a written statement from person you got it from,- saying that the title has been lost - or previous owner has died, and title was not to be found. If person you get a bill of sale from was the owner, and title is just lost, you can apply for a "lost title" ( this will cost you less than a "new title"), In either case it will take them a while to research it and clear car for another title!
In Texas where I live it is easy to get another title for a car this old, as long as you can prove it is not stolen. A new title (with search) is about $100 now, a lost title is around $25.

One thing to remember is that all the info is on microfiche, so it takes some time to get the information. As well a lot of the micro fiches are no longer readable so the data for some cars is gone for ever. Good Luck.
