Why dont new car models look as good as the ones previous?

207,clio,punto,golf and more all look a bit pants except for the sporty models, what does everyone else think on this?

Answers:
206, Clio and Punto have all been designed to meet new European pedestrian impact legislation. This has a great effect on the style of the front end of the car, requiring a longer front overhang and higher bonnet line, and careful positioning of the shut lines - basically the designer does not have the freedom they had with the previous models.

In a few years time designers may have developed better ways to deal with the legislative issues, or we may well just get used to the new proportions.

The problem with the Golf is a bit different - the Mk IV looked so good, they never really stood a chance of bettering it with the MkV. There is also the issue that the Mk IV was criticised for its handling, and for the performance of the GTi versions, so with the MkV the investment went into the suspension and engines, rather than the design. They had a similar problem with the MkII, which didn't look as good at the time as the MkII (but for some reason it now looks better - the MkII looks very out-of-date now).

I heard a rumour in the car design community a few years ago that VW had put a lot of effort into the Phaeton and Touareg, and suddenly found themselves with the deadlines for replacing Passat and Golf nearing, and no real design ideas in place. If that's true then maybe they just didn't have time to make the MkV Golf look as good as it should.
The latest models are pretty pants. I think it is mainly to do with concept cars. And the current cars on the market are all the same and selling well. Because of this the manufactures and designers think that they are on to a winner. When clearly they are not.
They want you to pay that bit more, like nice alloys, spoiler, don't forget the metallic paint and you got to have fog lights to annoy people when its not foggy!
You just can't beat the originals!
After the Ka, everything went round and bubble-ish. Hate it. What happened to the style of the capris, fastbacks and muscle cars.
agreed.
i was speaking about that today.
they should do a competition to let members of the public design a new model!

(maybe not - ever seen that episode of the simpsons when Homer designs the car that makes his bro's company go bust!)
