He could do Jail time, most likely the only thing that will happen is your mother is going to have to go through hell trying to get the negative reporting off of her credit. The system really hasn't evolved yet, it's still stuck in the stone age when it comes to these things. Mostly b'cuz there isn't any competition in the credit reporting business, they run a monopoly.
It is a crime in most states to take out a loan in another person's name, and if he forged her signature, he's in for some hard times. You should report it to the police immediately since it may also be considered elder abuse. I hope the car gets repossessed - it would serve him right. Too bad it will hurt his mother's good credit.
