Rover 400 - Power steering leak - can you help ?

Have got a leak in the system somewhere - down approx. 1cm below the minimum in top up tank - terrible noise when trying to steer - topped it up - fixed the problem - week later, same problem, fluid back to the same level. I am going to take a look at the weekend to try and track down the leak - is there anything I should know before I attack it ? would be grateful for any useful tips - never messed with the power steering system before and not exactly sure how it works etc.

Thanks

Immediately show it to the nearest worksop & get it fixed. Very dangerous!!!
the power steering system is pretty straight forward on a rover 400. Nothing to particulally worry about. Get stuck in there mate its a shitty job but someones got to do it.
There are 2 lines going to the PS pump. A pressure line and a return line. The pressure line is the most likely culprit, unless the return line has been rubbing up against the frame or linkage somewhere. Pretty easy fix with the right tools. You will require what is called a line wrench, the replacement part and more PS fluid. Some rags wouldnt hurt either.
Check the bellows at the ends of the steering rack if they are ballooning out your steering rack is defective .Unless you are a very competent mechanic you will have to replace the rack assembly .The noise you get is the power steering pump running dry of lubricant.
try to find where the fluid is coming from it shouldnt be that hard to find
