Question is Buy a diesel or petrol car? Diesel is more expensive than petrol but diesel gives you more mpg's.

Diesel is meant to be worse for the environment.
How many miles do you do a year? If it's more than 15000 then diesel is probably the way to go.
Why not buy a flexi-fuel car?
You'll save a lot on fuel with the diesel and if it is a decent newer model there will be little performance difference.
If you do a few miles you could always buy a petrol car and get it converted to gas. It is much cheaper to run but obviously you have to take in the cost to convert it. They also make some cars that run on gas or petrol but these cost more to buy and I guess are harder to get hold of secondhand.
A recent report showed that due to diesel being more expensive to start with you have to do about 50,000 miles of driving before it becomes cheaper then petrol.for the first 50k you will be spending about the same on fuel as you would if you owned the equvilante petrol car.
Also Diesel is stinky nasty stuff.

It depends what kind of driving you do most. I am reliably informed that if you only do short around town journeys petrol is best - diesels only really benefit you if you do long motorway drives, because until they warm up properly they are inefficient. Or so I'm told by my co-workers.
Well if you want more miles buy a diesel or if you dont buy a petrol, The price may be slightly more for a diesel but its worth it and the fuel aint much more either,

I found that diesel is cheaper everywhere in Europe apart from the UK, usually by 10%-20%. It has a higher melting point (freezing point) than petrol, and so this might be a consideration if you intend driving anywhere that gets close to -20 centrigrade.
My personal choice was to have one of each, and then use the vehicle most suitable for the environment that I am driving in.
depends on your mileage a year servicing is normally smaller mileage then petrol diesal can last longer then petrol engines.the other option would be an lpg converted car only 50 pence a litre plus you can run on petrol as well
Ever thought of LPG its cheaper.
If you go to Blooming Futures they can convert your diesel engine to run off vegetable oil. This means that it is not as expensive (about 50p per litre) and you're helping the environment.

Petrols use more fuel when cold, as they have a manual or automatic choke.
Diesels don't
I only have a diesel, 2 ton 4x4 and does 32MPG(UK gallons)
unless your doing 30000 miles a year a diesel will start to cost you as the servicing for them gets dearer as they gt older this was in th e mail on sunday a few years ago when i read the article made me get rid of mine and go back to petrol
