Honda Civic. You simply can't go wrong with a Honda.
Dodge Neon RT! You can find one for about $3000-$4000, and they are GREAT looking, and American, and reliable, not to mention powerfull! Or a regular Neon! Buy American.
Are Tonka still going..
They made some great small cars when I was a kid.
Either Golf or Audi A3. Although nothing would get me to part with my Range Rover Sport !

peugeot 1007 or 107 or a smart.
Mazda 3 by far!
Toyota Corolla. Cant beat their reliability, price, and gas mileage. Plus, they are way more peppy then I had expected
IF YOU MEAN A SMALL FAMILY CAR, THEN THE HONDA FIT. THE BEST CONVERTIBLE IS THE 2006 MAZDA MX5 MIATA.
a corsa they are good
I have a fiat punto 1.2, nice and comfy, very reliable, had it 3 years and it's never broken down, also very economical and roomy.
Love them or hate them I drive a Renault clio 1.5dci (80bhp). I'm 6 ft 3, and I fit in comfortably.
It does 65mpg even when driven hard, is £220 a year for me to insure, and costs just £50 a year to tax. (YES £50!)
Go for the 100bhp Dynamique if you can - they go somewhat sharpish, whilst retaining good fuel economy.
There are better cars if you have more money to spend (VW & Honda) but they will cost a lot more to buy and run.
Honda Civic, it meets and exceeds safety and gas mileage.
I love my Acura RSX Type-S. If you want something more economical and with a softer suspension - go with the Honda Civic. It's very similar, just lacks the punch.
A hybrid might be nice. I haven't actually driven one. or rode in one for that matter. But you can always test-drive a hybrid. Good Luck!

I own and have owned 2 acura integras a 96 coupe and a 98 sedan(currently have a sedan..the coupe was my first car) and ive also owned a honda civic.
The acuras i havent had ONE single problem with them..they are amazing cars. They get excellent gas mileage and are comfortable and reliable cars (both sedan and coupe). The integra was replaced by the RSX..id expect the same from the RSX.
The civic i owned was a 95..with 130K miles..such a POS ..we had alot of problems with it..and it doesnt MOVE..it cant move out of its own way. Didnt get the best gas mileage either..my acuras get much better..there made real crappy too.it just wasnt the greatest car..i only kept it for like 2 months until i bought my 4dr integra.
Honda is a good quality car..acura is obviously much better made.
toyota is OK..we had a camry..it had a few problems..
