How does the parking gear on an automatic gearbox work?

My parking gear is slipping and I want to know how it works to help me fix this

Answers:
You might need to adjust your linkage. Pick up a service manual from the library, auto parts store or web.

MAKE Sure that you really put on REVERSE.
my volvo slips too.. but, you have to really ensure that it's on R so that it wont slip..
If it still slip, i advice you to go to mechanic.
The parking gear locks onto your driveplate(autobox equivalent of clutch) this prevents the transmission and driven wheels from turning.
If it is slipping it sounds like excessive internal wear on this part oe or more of the components may need replacing.
