It was possible to get them with an 1800cc motor and they went like the clappers. Kharman Ghia used to buy bodies from SA to make their ragtop version and you still see these around here in Germany and nice they are too!
you can buy brand new mk1 golfs, right hand drive from south africa, they still make them there, they are called city golfs, not sure on the gti though
