Can someone please explain what a PD engine is?

Just bought a 2004 Skoda Octavia 2 litre Tdi PD, which goes like a rocket,AND seems to run on air. . .averageing 58 mpg. . . but can't seem to find what the "PD" means. Also wonder if, when we travel to Germany, I can use Bio-diesel, as that is much cheaper than normal fuel there. . . and my 2002 Octavia 1.9 Tdi went quite happily on it with no significant reduction in performance or economy.
Cheers,

PD is "Pumpe Duse". Translated, it means "pump injectors".
