Wales to be at forefront of build on worlds most expensive car
The most expensive luxury car in the world will be built in Wales under plans being drawn up by a secret consortium, The Times reports.
Project Zircon is well under way and would bring 700 jobs to the South Wales region when the consortium starts production of the car, possibly in four years. The car, which will be more expensive than a £250,000 Rolls-Royce, is likely to be built on a site between Cardiff and Swansea.
The car would be the consummate luxury model, full of wood and leather and entirely made and funded in Britain. But competition to attract the fat chequebooks of the super-rich is greater than ever among carmakers, and it seems that models costing more than the price of a three-bedroom house are rolled out every month.
Such demand for cars in the motoring stratosphere has encouraged Project Zircon, and it is believed that the new model can tap into a niche for a purely British car, powered by a British-made engine and with no backing from a foreign multinational. Although Bentley and Rolls-Royce are still made in Britain, they are owned by German companies: Bentley by Volkswagen and Rolls-Royce by BMW.
How quickly Project Zircon will have a car ready to join the stable of expensive British thoroughbreds already on the market remains to be seen. The Germans and Italians make supercars but it appears that the cachet of a British badge has not tarnished, even after years of crisis and the handover of Britains mass producers to multinationals making world cars, designed in studios in Stuttgart and Tokyo. When it comes to luxury allied to seriously high performance, they still come to Britain to find their talent.

Ettore Bugatti, the talented son of a family of artists from Milan, Italy, designed each legendary Bugatti car. Between 1909 and 1940, nearly 8,000 Bugattis - racing cars, sports cars, and luxury cars left his small factory. The most remarkable of all his cars was the Type 41 Royale. This car is six meters long with a wheelbase of 4.3 meters and a 12.7-liter, eight-cylinder engine. It has a three-speed gearbox, reaching 145 km/h in second gear. It took Ettore Bugatti almost two decades to perfect this car and it brought his company to the brink of ruin. Ettore had planned a series limited to only 25 cars exclusively for royals but only six were built. All six Royales remain and are, of course, very pricey.

Why is the Bugatti badge an elephant? Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916), brother of the car's creator Ettore, was a sculptor best known for his animal works and human figures. The Jardin des Plantes wildlife park was near his home in France and Rembrandt spent a lot of time there studying animals such as elephants, panthers, emus, wolves, camels, vultures, and lions. Actually, Bugatti holds that illustrious title but, its not the veyron. in 1927 Ettore Bugatti built 6 Bugatti type 41 Royales. In 1927 they cost between $30,000 and $60,000. As there are only 6 they rarely come up for sale the last one sold for over $20 million US dollars!
