When driving in the UK, should you always indicate to change lanes? And what speed should I change gears at?

Help! I have my driving test on Friday. My instructor has always said there's no need to indicate when changing lanes unless traffic is close behind, but I had a mock test and got marked down several times for this.

Also I've been taught to get my speed up before going up a gear (like almost 40mph before going into 4th) but got marked down for this too.

Please tell me what is correct.

Answers:
you only need to indicate if someone will benefit from your indications and that in doing so you do NOT give false information to other roadusers. As with the gear changing, use your rev counter and keep the revs in between 1500 and 3000rpm.
always indicate to be on the safe side and changing gear depends on the car
Don't ask me, i failed my third test last week!!!!
Best of luck for Friday though!!
You should always indicate when you change your position on the road. As for gear change well thats up to you.
I think it would be wise to indicate any change of direction & get into the habit of doing so, whether or not there is another vehicle close or not. With ref to changing gears, this will come with practice but you can generally get to know when to do it by the tone of the engine...Good luck with the test ( & remember if you make a mistake dont go to pieces or give up, try even harder for the rest of the test, you still might make it)
Always indicate to change lanes. You certainly wont be marked down for it.

As far as speed and gears, you select the right gear for the speed you are going. At 30 (with a five or six gear car) you might only need 4th gear. Listen to your engine. If it is screaming at you, you are in too low a gear. If your car is juddering, you are in too high a gear. If you are not in the correct gear, you will not be in proper control and may be marked down.
Simple
Always Indicate, even if there are no cars present.
The highway code states that you only need to indicate if cars are present. I think this needs overhauling.
You would be wise to always indicate, not doing so is rude and anti social.
As far as gear changes go, for your test you should keep your revs down, stick below 4000rpm, otherwise you'll look like a boy racer!!
indicate at every oppurtunity that way you get used to doing it naturally, they can not mark you down for indicating your intensions to other road users even if they are miles behind you,

gear changes depend really on the vehicle, i had a car that used to hit 50 in third happily but then 5th gear was really for above eighty and the car topped out at 140mph, my work truck used to do 40 in fifth,

you should be looking to change gears smoothly at around 2500 to 3000 rpm.

good luck on your test.
when doing any manovre you should always mirror then indicate, and the engine tells you by the sound when to change gear -- it kind of begs you
ALWAYS indicate.
As for the gears, i would have said you were right, but if youre not sure then ask the instructor
It is best to indicate when changing lanes, even if there is little or no traffic behind you. It just lets other drivers know what you intend to do even though they may not be directly behind.

When it comes to changing gears:
10mph go up to 2nd
20mph go up to 3rd
30mph go up to 4th
40mph go up to 5th

Hope that helps, good luck with your driving test!
I would indicate before any manoeuvre, as the other drivers on the road are not mind readers.
As for the gears when your engine starts to complain change gears.
The exact speed varies a lot from one car to another.

Hope this helps and good luck with the test.
The answer for the test won't necessarily be the answer which real-world drivers will tell you.
always indicate it's good manners, listen to your engine that will give you a clue when to change gear. Good Luck.
An advanced driver will only indicate, if after checking in his mirror, there is traffic approaching from behind. If the road is clear behind why bother. Your second part is a little ambiguous. The examiner wants you to attain the speed limit asap, Most modern cars will go to 40 in second gear, but your tester will want you to be in top gear, ie fourth, asap. But do it gently, not like a race car. Good luck, and don,t panic
close is the key word
if you are going to have effect on other road users indicate to them if they are close
on your test I would indicate if you can see other cars on the road

good luck with your test
let me know how you get on
Hi,
You should ALWAYS indicate when changing lanes even if there is no traffic around (if they ask you why tell them that a car could suddenly appear at any time, you'll get brownie points)

Each car is different but i'd say from 1st gear up to 10-15mph, 2nd gear up to 20-25mph then 3rd up to 30-35mph, 4th gear to about 40-50 mph then 5th.

It sounds like your driving instructor needs have lessons himself.

I used both of these and i passed my test 1st time.
If you need anymore advice just email and i'll try and help.
You should always indicate when changing lanes or at a junction even if there are no cars behind.

The only time you don't have to indicate is if you overtake something on a single carriageway road. You have to indicate to pull out, but do not have to, to pull in, then, I suppose it never hurts to indicate.

As for gears, listen to the car, if it has a rev counter look at it for a guide if you have to. 4th at forty sounds about right, then it depends on the car and the road conditions. Just use your own judgement.
you should indicate to change lanes when other road users are about, this includes pedestrians, and change up or down about every 10 mph. of road speed.
Its simple just remember mirror, signal, Manoeuvre, on your test you should allways indicate when changing lanes.

It is dificult to say when to change gear, as it depends on the car but remember not to race and listen to the engine, you should be able to hear when to change.

PS your driving instructor sounds like an idiot. What does he class as close behind?
Nothing worse than people just pulling out in front of you without indicating.
Yes..always indicate when ever you are going to change lanes, it lets other road users know what you are going to do.(Your driving instructor needs a kick up the bum a new career away from driving, he knows nothing about safety on the road).
As for changing gears.up or down.Liston to your engine, if it sounds like it's over revving then change up a gear.if it sounds like it's going to stall then change down a gear.easy as that.
The speeds you'll be doing on your test will be slow enough to keep you out of trouble.
Good luck on the day and remember.keep calm and NEVER panic.
Yes Yes you certainly do indicate change of lane, your instructor was out of order to tell you otherwise secondly if your automatic the car takes care of your problem, if manual then always change gear if your car has got the revs too high, if your suggesting 40 mph then your revs should be about 20000.the noise of the engine will tell you if your pushing it. good luck in your driving test
Hayley has given you a yardstick for gearchanges and it seems ok by me.
But I use a slight varient while I#ll share with you.
Change from 0 [neutral] to 1st at 0mph
Change from1st to 2nd at 12 mph [1-2!]
Change from 2nd to 3rd at 23 mph [2-3]
Change from 3rd to 4th at 34 mph [3-4]
Change from 4th to 5th at 45 mph [4-5]
Top speed would the next gear which is not there [56]
Never go higher than 3rd gear in a 30 zone.
A good, safe driver always indicates before changing lanes so that you can alert other drivers of your lane change and lets face it, that's vital. Also you must check your mirrors aswell. Depending on the road, especially in London all the roads have their speed limit signs on the road and you must always obey those limits.

On friday just try your best!
Read 'Roadcraft : The Police Driver's Handbbok'. An excellent publication.
Always indicate a signal, so that anybody, including the police, will know that you aren't driving off your knocker.

I never realized that there was a speed to change gears at. I always just listen to the car. When it starts to get a high pitch (3000-3500) rpm, its time to shift. You can delay your shift if you need to have more power to accelerate.
always indicate to change lane speed dependant on the road conditions
yes & when its ready for change
Always indicate when changing road position, empty roads or otherwise.
