Had car brake shoes replaced yesterday & have noticed that the handbrake is a lot slacker - is this OK??
Answers:
im a mechanic and if i fixed the car then the hand r brake would be better or at least the same as when you took it in. as for the wheel cylinder i would go back back and ask them what they mean because if its split it will normally leak if not then it will sieze up. get it back in there and get um to sort it!
Try setting off in 3rd gear with the handbrake on. if you move, even a little, somethings wrong, if you dont move at all, it's fine. Dont know anything about the wheel cylinder though, sorry.
If you had brake shoes replaced, and the handbrake is not as tight, it was mis-adjusted. It is a simple thing to fix, so I would take it back to the shop that did the repair.
it sounds to me that the automatic brake adjusters are not working. the mechanic could have if he was bothered adjusted them manually for you. it is not good as the wheel cylinders will protrude to the full extent and unltimately they will leak fluid. I really dont understand how the mechanic says that your wheel cylinders are split i have never come across this, ever, there is nowhere for them to split. take your car to a decent mechanic in future and get them checked out asap
It is normal for new brake shoes (not pads) to be soft and even a little spongy when they are new. They need time to bed in.
As for the cylinder being split I guess they mean the seal not the cylinder itself and I am surprised that they didnt change it there and then as it could start leaking at any time now.
You own a Fiat Punto 1.2..? good luck with that then.
yes it is ok there is a star wheel adjuster that will tighten your shoes a little each time you back up. u should replace the wheel cylinder as soon as possible.
