Was the r 5 gt turbo the best/fastest hot hatch of the late nineties?

Um no, nor was it the best of the late 80's. I drove one once and it was like driving a tyrannosaurus Rex!! It was rubbish. A VW Scirocco GTI may be able to claim that prize as it was different, and stuck to the road like glue, while still be very fast. The renault 5 had all the aerodynamic properties of a block of flats, and you had to drive it like you would an oil tanker, "there's a corner 3 miles ahead driver", "All right gov I better start turning the wheel now then if we wanna make it"!!!
especially the mid engined version, not a lot that could take it out!
just a shame they used to boil themselves.
It was undoubtedly the fastest of it's type but they had the build quality of a Cornflakes box! The 205 Gti was probably the best to drive but the Mk1 and Mk2 Golf Gti's were as good and much better built. I have owned 4 Daihatsu Charade GTti's in the past. A fantastic little car with 99BHP from 1 litre! Great fun as were all the 80's hot hatches! Happy days!
Probably not the best, but one of the greats. Bit too unreliable for me to own. fast though, driven one scared the cr@p out of me at 18 years old, but gave me one hell of a buzz. probably would do now too. i love my retro 80's cars.
i had two 5 turbos absolutly great little fast cars loved them both,,,, french pocket rocket 14 watercooled leave most of your other hatches etc ure rs,xr s etc
