Is an aftermarket air filter better than a standard one?

Answers:
Yes high end aftermarket air filters are better then a standard oem paper air filter. But the real benifit is in cost. Between $10 and $20 dollars for oem replacements every 3,000 to 6,000 miles is expensive over the entire life time ownership. An aftermarket cost about $40 dollars needs to be replaced only every 80,000 to 100,000 miles and cleaned every 3,000 to 6,000. Its far cheaper to clean and aftermarket then replace a oem.
Yes, you are going to gain approx. 5 horsepower depending on the filter and vehicle.
It depends you can buy cheap airfilters which are universal, but if you go for a k&n or pipercross for example they will increase performance
It depends on what brand and the quality of both the stock and the aftermarket filters.
No, because with the aftermarket air filters the fibers from them can cause damage and/or failure to the mass air flow sensor. On some cars this sensor can be expensive. It is worth a few extra bucks to get the original.
yes, more m.p.g. more horsepower, more mileage, looks cooler, last lomger..Nuff said.
