O ring, Quad Ring, Permatex, paper, rubber. what kind of mechanical equipment we talking about here? Whats the application?
rubber paper cork plastic
Rubber, cork, paper, plastic, silicone, mixture of cork and neoprene. Depends on the application. Always use the best for the job - replace with equal quality or better.
aluminum, copper, cork, paper, rubber.etc
1. Paper gaskets. These are normally just industrial grade paper of various thicknesses. They are the same shape of mating surfaces and allow pieces to be glued together, and still taken apart later.

2. Rubber gaskets. Like paper gaskets but made out of rubber or neoprene. Normally both sides are coated with a grease at assembly to make them air or liquid tight.

3. O-rings, fit on shafts or screws to prevent leakage from air or liquid flow on one side of the shaft or screw.

These gaskets all come in an infinite number of shapes and sizes. And new gaskets can be designed to fit an application.

Oil, grease, or glue are used to increase the sealing capabilities of all of these gaskets.

One of the things that need to be taken into account is when installing a gasket usually two mechanical pieces are bolted together on either side of the gasket. If the bolts or screws are overtightened it can cause a "pinch" in the gasket which will allow a leak. THis is like when you over tighten your shoe strings and the tounge of your shoe doubles up on the top of your foot. WHen you take your shoes and socks off at the end of the day you can see the pressure lines on the top of your foot.
