Which make and model is best for a first car?
People have been tellin me to get somethin really cheap as a first car as i will prob end up crashing it etc but i dont have the cash to keep buying cheap cars if something goes wrong with it.
Am i better off getting a cheap car that can be replaced or spending more on a car that wont go wrong very often?

If you can afford 130-150 pounds a month for a new small car, then I would recommend looking at the Toyota Aygo/ Pug 107/ Citroen C1. They are all the exact same car but C1 is cheapest by up to £2k less than the Aygo! you can get a brand new C1 for £5500 on the road ( roughly 125 a month for 5 years ). Insurance class 1! and only £40 a year road tax! It is a great small car.
If you can go the £150 a month look at the Suzuki Swift, great small car with loads of extras for little money. Y ou will treat a better car with more respect than you would an old run about. I regularly take friends and work mates car shopping as I am a part time film set driver and car mad! Last time I looked for a small car was 2 weeks ago, my friend bought a Swift as her second car. ( only 19 years old her first was an old pug 106 she had for a year and spent a fortune on! )
Feel free to contact me if you want to know more.
Buy a cheap car that won't break down often. For example Honda's Vtec has never broken down, Nissan makes reliable cars too. It's up to you though.
anything by ford but not older than five years, you will just end up spending loads of money
assuming you are in th uk and under 25 then your insurance premiums are going to be sky high. i would strongly suggest you get a small sized, small engined car. this is because you will pay less insurance and also be able to afford a new car, with cheaper running / maintanance costs incidently.
if you dont make any claims at least you can start to build a no claim bonus.
i would suggest something like a ford ka / fiesta or similar.
please dont buy a citroen tho lol they are cheap but awful.
Honda and dont ask why?
I have found that if I spend about 350-450 pound on a banger that looks decent with tax and mot and good engine and gearbox and then spend another 300 on tyres, brakes, shocks or whatever else needs doing you have a very good car for £900 or less and it will be more reliable then spending £900 on a car in the first place. Also get insurance quotes before you buy as this can put a real spanner in the works if you choose an expensive to insure model.
my 1st car was a ford fiesta that i got for £325, lucky it was cheap as i wrote it off after a month!
Mini..
My mate wrecked her first car but that was only because it was cheap and she didnt really care..Your first car should really be expendable its not just your driving you have to worry about its everyone elses lol.a small car with power steering is probably best..corsa or peugoet
for Ur first car a cheap one is the best, as Ur insance will be cheaper, get something with a small size engine too, that will help with the insurance, and running costs, thats inportant, cos U know that when U get Ur first car U'll be driving every where in it, so cheaper the fuel bill the better. also with a smaller car U can get less people init, so U won't be able fit as many people in it, which is a good thing, as all Ur friends will be after U for lifts and for U to drive them everywhere
My daughter has bought two cars withing a two period since she has passed her test. She is really glad she bought an 'old banger', as she has pranged it not realising how far away from a concrete bollard she was and also scuffed the rims beause of distance from the kerb. She has also scuffed the corner of her car-the paintword-scraping by the side of our brick wall. But she has really got much more confidence in knowing the width of her vehicle and I have even let her drive my car to see if she could get in any car and feel comfortable. Her second car was difference and once again getting into different cars has made her more confiendent in knowing she can manage any car within reason. The first was a Citreon and the second is a Rover Metro, she loved the first one for nippiness etc but didnt feel safe on the road, too light, the second she felt more safer but it was also bigger inside. The first was under 1000cc and the secnond is 1110cc. In both instances a couple of things went wrong but nothing major, make sure you are in the AA, RAC, or Green flag, it does help, also I expect dad, brother, neighbour or someone will always be there to help, they love getting under the bonnet thinking they know best! She is now getting a brand new car, a Kia, it suits all, 4 door that way her boyfriend and perhaps her friends can get in without having to step out herself especially if its raining etc and it has everything she could have. She is not going for the roof as it doesnt really get used that much, but air conditioning, yes. Her friend has a KA and she feels squashed in it. Also on selling it she would get more for the Kia than the KA.She bought all the silly pink things like rims, seat covers, stickers, etc etc and she feels she doesnt want to do that with the new car though she does want to make her mark on it, but not too falmboyuant. Think small, cc, mileage to the gallon, insurance and tax,and all the prangs you'll have in it THEN after a couple of years go for the big un, have fun and think wise.
Buy somthing with a small engine as you will be paying lots more on insurance.
Remember that if you start off cheap you can save for a better car next year, as hopfully you will have a No claims bonus.
Make sure it has a long MOT
I would suggest
Peugoet 309, 106
Citoroen ZX (Peugoet 309 with a different body) Saxo (yep its a Peugot 106)
Honda Civic.
Rover 200 (Honda engines)
Suzuki Swift.
Daewoo Matiz.
Nissan Micra.
Fiat Punto, (bit crap though as bits fall off) But get your insuarance quites first and shop around,
You buy the best, safest & most reliable car that you can afford. If you are a drink/drug driver, then you shouldn't be driving at all; if you are just a bit nervous on the road having only recently passed your test, then you can take extra driving lessons, if you can afford it. If you can't, then just start to drive for the pleasure of it. Difficult, I know, when you're sat in a traffic jam at rush hour. Some people drive for a lifetime, & never have a bump (although they may cause a good few other people to). If you always put on clean underwear, just in case you get run over by a bus (& not because you should put clean underwear on every day), then you should maybe consider taking the bus, so at least it won't run you over.
Don't listen to these jerks! Buy a really good motor and you will drive better 'cos you'll be thinking of her and look after her, wont you? Enjoy your driving!
Depreciation is the biggest cost in motoring, so the less you pay when you buy it the more (on average) you save in the end.
Personally - because I'm not worried about appearing uncool - I'd buy a smallish Japanese car, maybe 7-8 years old. Something like a Nissan Almera that goes for ever and is cheap because it's deeply unfashionable. You can get a 10-year-old one for under £500.
I have been in the motor trade for a long time and in my opinion for a good cheap reliable car it is hard to beat the nissan micra
lambaretta
