Is it possible to drive in Australia on a British driving licence or do I have to obtain another licence?

does one have to have an International driving licence to drive in Australia or is it possible to drive there on a British driving licence? This is the older type of licence and does not have an identity photograph on it.

Answers:
yes you can for one year
You should be fine, I think . Just plead ignorant.
You will need an International Driving Licence.
I think your ok with uk license?
I used to live on Australia and had no problems. I checked into it when i was out there and if i was a permanent resident, i had a period of time to change it( i cant remember the exact amount specified and its different for each state). I lived in W.A. This was 14 years ago and it was the old style licence.
