The Mini will be faster to 60 in a straight line although the Golf has a higher top speed
It has more power (210BHP) and is lighter than the Golf
However, the Mini is only a 1.6 (albeit supercharged) whereas the Golf is a 2 litre turbo. This means that the Golf can achieve higher speeds.
Also - with a little tweak of the software, the Golf can easily go from its standard 197BHP to approximately 250BHP
This would bring its 0-60 time down from 6.7 secs to low 6's, to at least match the Mini and raise its top speed by a few MPH as well. The Mini wouldn't chip much higher than it is already. The Works version is basically a modified Cooper S, so its already had the upgrades.
Please note that the Golf with the DSG gearbox is faster than the manual gearbox version.

Mk1 Golf GTi
its a close call but i would think the golf is by a nose the mini might slightly quicker to 60 though but not by much
The Mini Cooper Works is quicker than a Golf GTI on both acceleration and top speed. It handles better too, the Golf being more `family orientated` than the Mini.
As a sports car the Mini wins it easily, but for every day use.maybe.just maybe the Golf will be easier to live with, but, it is soft by comparison.
