I have just pulled about 15 feet of what looks like fibre glass rope out of the tailpipe of my renault clio ?

sounds like the exhaust silencer has broken down the rope is used inside the large exhaust boxes to reduce noise usually the catalyst is filled with a hard honeycomb type material and would not come out like this

It's most likely the Catalyst out of your catalytic converter in your exhaust system. It will cause your emissions output to increase. Not a problem unless your state requires emissions checks for licensing or you are a greenie\tree hugger.
You have a CLIO.how cool. I wish we could get those in the States. It could be from the muffler or catalytic converter. Muffler is inexpensive. Converter.expensive.
This happened to my friend a couple of months ago, she thought it was hair and even checked the boot of her car to check there wasn't a dead body in there!! Seriously though, it was her silencer and she had a new one fitted. Cost about £50 but that was for an old corsa.
