My fiat punto started clanking got worse was slow to move and now just starts with lots of exhaust fumes why?

the car started and sounded fine drove about 20 miles and started clanking stopped when i took foot off accelerator. didnt make noise in reverse or on tickover. by the time i drove to garage it was happening all the time. it now starts with a real struggle but roars and will barely move. so much exhaust smoke

IS THE SMOKE WHITE? CHECK THE OIL IS IT A CREAMY COLOR? IF SO HEAD GASKET. COULD ALSO BE A ROD.
DO YOU CHANGE OIL REEGULARLY? A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF WHITE SMOKE CAN MEAN BURNING OIL OR WATER IN THE CRANK CASE. DID THE CAR OVER HEAT. IF NOT ITS PROBABLY A ROD AND SERIOUS DAMAGE. DO NOT START THE CAR AGAIN UNTIL YOU HAVE IT REPAIRED YOU POSSIBLY CAUSE MORE DAMAGE. THE MORE I THANK ABOUT IT I THANK ITS A ROD.
If it is white smoke your engine has a serious problem, pure black smoke means too much fuel, I would guess from what you said that it is a bearing in the engine on the crankshaft or piston rod, it is causing one piston hang up or wobble which makes noise, smoke, and a lot of power loss.
