Why does my vw golf 1.4 keep stalling at roundabouts?

Answers:
We don't have "roundabouts" in the US. They must be circular road junctions in England I suspect. So it only stalls when your going around in circles. In the days of carbureted engines, that would be more understandable than for today's fuel injected engines. Of course your fuel (petrol) tank is full which eliminates fuel sloshing considerations. I wonder if it would still stall if you went counterclockwise rather than clockwise or vice versa? It could be the fact that your taking your foot off the accelerator pedal and the throttle plate returns to a full seating position in the throttle bore. I suggest you have your throttle plate and bore opening cleaned at your auto shop, whatever they call that in Great Britain.
Are you a nervous driver? Could be psychological.if you're nervous about when to go you could be unconsciously causing the car to stall.?
There could be many reasons why this would happen. I would first check the overall condition of the ignition system and spark plugs. Its also worth checking the tension on the throttle cable to ensure that it is taut when there is no pressure on the throttle otherwise the engine revs might be dropping off when you de-clutch because the cable has stretched, this is very common in cars with a throttle cable (not fly-by-wire throttles on modern cars). Depending on the age of the car it will have either a carburettor or fuel injection and the possible causes are slightly different in either case. Its possible the cold starting system is at fault if it happens mostly from cold otherwise the idle speed might be low for the above reasons. Tweaking up the idle speed a few RPM would probably help but the throttle cable is the most likely suspect. On VW products it comes across the engine and the outer sleeve terminates on a bracket, held in place by a clip, remove the clip and pull the outer cable surround back until the cable appears taut (not too tight!) then reapply the clip to finalise the adjustment.
I think you mean "traffic circles," not roundabouts.
bobweb / Mike:

We do in fact have plenty of "roundabouts" in the US. A good example is the rotary before the Sagamore bridge connecting Cape Cod to Massachusetts. All inbound traffic is required to yield, so technically that is a "roundabout" rather than a traffic circle.
are you low on gas. centrifugal force might be preventing your fuel pump from picking up enough fuel.
