Ford Ka 2. we have difficulty engaging gears its like the gear ghange is hitting some thing solid,?
Answers:
Could be a broken engine mounting, so get a mate what knows about motors to have a butchers pronto,
Of course in the case of excess wealth syndrome you could book it in to a Garage but if you had excess wealth you would not have a Ka would you.
check to see if next doors cat is wrapped around your fan belt.
it sounds like your actual gearbox has dropped a few mil down, although this is unlikely, could be just a case of a new clutch I'd take it in as soon as poss, as this sounds like its one of them thing that will get slowly worse, and damage other things
I've had 3 KA's and never had that problem, it was always the steering rack that was the problem with mine, but if it's not the fact that the clutch has gone (usually this makes a grinding wirringy sound on gear changes when down shifting to slow down), or been damaged by heavy gear changing at high revs or dropped down too far a gear, then u might have broken one of the sprockets on one or more gears. Either a way I think it'll cost u money no matter what. Get it to a mechanic and have them look at it - better still take your car to a local college that teach motor mechanics and u might save a few £££ - if your nice about it. They usually need a new clutch after 40,000-45,000 miles.
It sounds as though the linkage to the gearbox is worn and adjustement will solve the problem temporarily. In any case its not an expensive job.The Clutch needs replacing very soon.
On most GM cars (Ford is owned by GM) thats caused by the gear selector shifting, so the gears are no longer in the same place as the stick would engage them. Needs a transmission specialist to fix perfectly but its not a huge job.
Broken engine mount is favourite.
The most common cause of difficulty engaging gears is a miss-adjusted clutch. If the clutch is cable operated then there is normally an adjuster on the cable at the bell housing end. If the clutch is hydraulic then it is self adjusting, however, if the pedal is only coming up half way then check for hydraulic fluid in the reservoir - if low you may need to bleed the system to get rid of air in the pipes - when there is air present in the tubes the movement on the pedal just compresses the air and doesn't activate the clutch release correctly.
For the information of Alex P, Ford is most definitely NOT owned by General Motors (GM).
Your Ka needs a new clutch.
tsk all these mean people scaring you with an expensive solution. Try getting just the clutch CABLE changed. sometimes this can fray in spots and cause sticking. If this does not work try checking if you need clutch fluid and if this fails then unfortunately you will prolly have to have more major work done to the car.
if the pedal is not returning properly then sounds as though the hydraulic release bearing is on its way out!
any sign of brake fluid around the bottom of the gearbox?
