How come you never see RAC or AA vans broken down by the side of the road?

I have seen them broken down, about once. It has something to with that they are looked after really well when they are the depot, they are always maintained, thats probably why you don't see them broken down on the Hard Shoulder of M4
because they rust out so fast

a) Because they're regularly serviced &
b) Because they have mechanics in them.

Vehicles these days are highly reliable, and most cases of breakdowns are actually caused by the user (run out of petrol etc or poor maintenance). If you execute a system of planned maintenance you should almost never break down.
