Does anyone think that road signing in the UK is absolutely absyml and desperately needs improving ?
That long main roads have their names clearly marked more than just once every four lightyears.
Bushes and trees obscuring signs be cut back regularly and cleaned say - eh - regularly and not once every decade !
In rural areas every street sign should also have:-
E for England
W for Wales
S for Scotland
on them so you know which bloody direction you're travelling in.
Yes I know there is sat-nav now, but this is a recent development and shouldn't basic street documentation be upgraded as I've said just for clarity and safety.

Yep!
Haven't driven for years myself, and rarely in this country but the idea of driving again is scary. The amount of signs and lights in towns can be insanely confusing at time - and it is your responsibily as a driver to be aware of them and follow them accordingly.
Here's one (photo) I prepared earlier:

And yes, there really are that many sets of traffic lights in that short space - and another Pelicon crossing just in front of the bus - and at least another 3 signs you can't see for the bus shelter (to the left).
Needs a complete overhaul for sure. For those that watched the BBC's 'Grumpy Old Men' I'm sure you recall the episode where the 40 something celebrities ranted about the profusion of road signs in London.
Addenda: Yes, other countries are grossly inadequate, but in places in the UK it's overkill.
If its abysmal in UK, what would you say about less developed countries like India?
you cant even call it road signs..
Its very good compared to Spain. We don't even get road name signs here! You never know where you are.
Thank you congratulations for the most dull question ever! Get a life. Cheers for the 2 points.
It's done to confuse strangers and was implemented in WW2. Fact.
You think its bad here try going abroad. its worse and i dont mean because you dont speak the lingo, even if you do its terrible, even the locals dont know what to do!
If you pay attention while driving you will discover that there is planty of time to see all of the signs.
And if you can see them get your eyes tested.
Or slow the **** up before you kill someone.
i think you've led a sheltered life mate. I work all over the world as part of my job and can honestly say there are very few countries that are better signposted than the UK. I admit there are is room for improvement here but even when comparing to other western european countries we are much clearer. France, Italy and Spain are horrendous, all the main roads have at least two road numbers and depending on what map you buy and what province you are in depends whether you are lucky enough to have the same numbers for the same road. You caould be driving along the right road but think you are on a different road because the numbers on the map are different to the ones on the signs purely because of political reasons. You drive in Spain and you get halfway up north and each city is given two names just to confuse you even more. Try driving in China or India mate. I've done it in both places and if you come accross a road sign then you've probably just driven over the border into someone elses country.
Stop slagging off your own country when you have no idea how it compares to other countries.
By the way, what a stupid idea to have E, S & W to tell what direction you're going in..! What a plonker! What if you're in the middle of Norfolk. how the fu*k is knowing which direction scotland is, going to help you direct your way through the broads.?
Bigboy passed his comments quite correctly regarding the country concerned, but did it never occur to you that the letters EWS are used along with N for something much more useful - like compass points?
I think your point about visibility of signs is a good one.
The local council have just replaced most of the signposts near me and they have positioned so many next to trees that will be blocking a clear view of them I'm somewhat amazed. 10 ft further on and they would be fine, but no!
The other annoyance is the height they put them at. A few of them are about 8 ft in the air, and positioned so close to the junction that they are outside of your field of vision if your in a car. They are only small signs so they wouldn't be blocking the view if lowered.
Where I live they make the signs so small especially when there is a speed camera ahead
