People used to say that UK police allowed 10% +2 over the limit before prosecuting. Is this still the case?

Everyone seems to have different theories so I was wondering whether anyone knew the truth. Also is it true that on a motorway an instant ban is given at 96 miles an hour or above?

Answers:
EACH COUNCIL AND POLICE AREA WORK ON DIFFERENT PERCENTAGE SO GIVE 10% PLUS A SPEED RATING IE 30MPH PLUS 4MPH PLUS 10% ANOTHER MAY GIVE
30MPH PLUS 5% AND NO LEA WAY SO BE WARNED THE ACTUAL SPEED LIMIT IS THE ONLY SURE ONE
THE 96 MPH IS A MYTH AS SOMEONE STATED A COPPER CAN MAKE A JUDGEMENT CALL AT THE TIME BUT ONLY A COURT CAN GIVE A BAN
As far as i know that is still corect
That's what I thought. Also their speed cameras (mobile) have to be calibrated before use. If they can't prove that it was, you get off.
10pints+10%=11pints+2=13pints id be pissed
It's easy to realise u r speeding when u flow with the traffic, just unlucky to get busted. I did 115 once and there was still someone up my *** waiting to get past so now i just tootle along at 70 - 80 and say screw em all.
Our local "safety camera partnership" was being interviewed on the radio a couple of weeks ago, and the representative actually said that it was now common knowledge that their error margin is 10% + 2.

So yes, it looks like you're right, and you can get away with driving at 79mph on the motorway.

As far as the other question is concerned, it's not just motorways. My ex was caught doing 102mph along an empty Lincolnshire A-road, and was given an instant ban. I'm not sure that it's 96 - I thought it was 100, and my husband thinks it's 90, but there is definitely a threshold where you're going to lose your licence without passing Go or collecting £200.
This used to be the case when you were clocked with a speedometer. They are not particularly accurate so you needed to be doing more than 35 mph before you could be booked in a 30 mph zone.
Speed cameras and radar guns are now very accurate. In theory you could be prosecuted for doing 31, although individual police forces might allow a little more leeway.
The reason speed cameras are so universally loathed is that you can now be fined for something that used to be tolerated but with no change in the law.
Police forces now vary, some will ticket you at 1 mph over the speed limit. No instant ban for 96+, courts have the authority to ban you only
I used to believe that was the case, but I now understand that different Police authorities have different guidelines, presumably based on accident statistics, weight of traffic and (dare I say it) cashflow. I also believe that if you are in a borderline situation, a lot comes down to the the way you handle the situation and the mood the policeman is in.

To cite my experiences, I got pulled over in London early one morning having been doing 42 in a 30 zone and was told off with a verbal warning, my Mum was recently caught on a fixed camera in oxfordshire doing 34 in a 30 limit and got 3 points and a fine.
Above 100 mph on any road you are likely to get not just a ban and very big fine, but some jail time as well. And yes, likely to be a ban even if you have no points before. Fine is usually based on number of miles per hour over the limit x20, if you have a previous record, then a lot more.
A friend of mine wasn't prosecuted but he was given a fixed penalty for driving at 32mph in a 30mph limit. It's ridiculous but I think it depends how the individual police officer is feeling on the day. The simple solution is DON'T SPEED.
depends on the copper on the day and yes 100mph plus is the ban speed and above
