Car model?

I am thinking of updating my old banger to a more modern car. I am a 22 yr old single mum, in a low paying job (yeah alright I hear ya, I need to get a higher payed job).

Any ideas what sort of car would be suitable? it would be just me and my kid.

Answers:
I would go with either a vw, they are great on miliage, they look good either for work or pleasure, they have plenty or room for you and your kid along with shopping etc & they are affordable.

If you choose a vw the model should be up to you, I have a vw beetle I have had it for 3yrs and it runs like a dream, gone through its MOT perfect everytime the only thing I have had done to it was have a new tyre after some crazy person slashed mine going up the road one night drunk.

There are alot of different makes and models out there to suit your needs, you just need to shop around abit, and don't be to hasty about jumping in to something you don't know what your buying. If your not to sure get someone you know, who knows about cars to go with you and take a look at it before you commit. Because, if you go on your own and who ever is selling the car sees that you know anything (not that I am saying you don't) about cars they will probably try and rip you off.

What ever sort of car you decide to buy make sure that it's reliable. And that your happy with it.

Well hope this helps, and hope you find the right car.

Good Luck & Happy Shopping
The new ford focus is really nice
What you got now? How about a Corsa, Fiesta (new), Clio, Peugeot 206/306?
Toyota Yaris.. 13G's. alot, but 40 miles per Gallon.
The 3 door is 11,000$
go to a reccommended car showroom dealer that does second hand cars
Ford Focus or Vauxhal Astras get my vote
My little Matiz does me very well (used to be made by Daewoo, but I think Chevrolet make them now). They are very reasonable to buy and cheap to run but very reliable (well, mine has been so far).
The citroen c1 is cheap, and cheap to run, but you should get one that is perhaps more like an X or W reg, cheaper but same quality, i would advise a Fiesta my friend had an R reg one for years, and she has 2 children (3rd on way) and she swears by ford!
Good luck!
Toyota-cheap and good quality
ford fiesta or a nissan micra
Go for a Japanese car. They go on forever and are really reliable. A Mazda or Toyota would be a good bet.
Since you are on a LOW PAY JOB and CAN AFFORD A NEW CAR,having a kid and all, here it goes an excellent 2 seater, just perfect for you and your kid:

The colour is great as well .
I used to have an R reg Ford KA2 and it was an excellent run around! You could get a newer one, go on to autotrader and you will find loads of second hand ones relatively cheap.

I now have a Renault Clio - and I love it! Its a 2003 reg and it cost me £4.5k and so far it has been really reliable!

Good luck - and let us know what you decide!
i am in similar possition with 3 little ones and so far loved all my cars for reliability and size..astra-corsa-nova-s. ibiza-and now another nova! not exactly modern but so easy to maintain etc. good luck xx
Ford KA (special edition if budget will stretch) or even a Skoda Fabia (at least 1.2 engine)
Go for a corsa they r good relible cars that are cheap to run.
Same as C.J
Ford Focus.
NACAP 4 stars(out of five) so its safe - the mark 1 model.
Its cheap to run and as a bloke, most important its fun to drive.
Its regularly voted best second hand buy.
For VW golf you'll pay too much.
I wouldn't go for a supermini - clio, fiesta, polo. They're too small. Not practical and you pay a premium for it as they're popular. For a real bargain if you can handle it is a Mondeo. Big safe car and cheaper than a Focus. The misses wouldn't let me though.
For less money 306 but not as safe. Thats the car I moved on from
As much as I hate to say it, coz I am not a lover of small cars, the Ford KA is great value for money and has everything you need.

I took the advice of a friend of mine in the trade when I was looking for something for my mother in law to replace her written off Fiesta.

He drives a 5 series BMW and has worked on everything from Rolls Royces to Skoda's and he reckons that the KA is brilliant for someone who wants a small economical and reliable car.

It has proven to be exceptional value for money. She loves it.
How about a beetle (the new type) their funky and are very low on petrol and milage and a perfect size for you and your kid.

And as a Plus your kid won't feel ashamed when he/she gets out of it he/she will think that their mum is cool and don't have the beat up old banger.

My sister has one and her kids love it. Most of the time before she updated her car they refused to set foot in the car for a lift. Now they are begging her for lifts.

Yeah it might not be the most up to date car at this present moment. But, at least it is afforable, in your price range and self sufficient for every day requirements.
Any Nissan, I have one with over 185,000 miles and it runs just great. It only cost me $1500 when I bought it 3 years ago and it still runs fine. Best wishes
Cars are an expensive necessity in our day and age. I would buy the least expensive new car, or used year old or so car with a transferable warranty. Some of those Korean cars are rated pretty high these days.

Unless you get unlucky, most cars are pretty good these days, and will last decades with just normal care. I wouldn't spend too much, because those payments seem to last forever!

Here in the states I have seen Buick's with 3.8 liter engines go for several hundred thousand miles.

I have a Honda now, but I don't drive that much. In the last fifteen years I have had several cars, but the highest mileage I have had is 85,000 miles before I get another car!
a reliable and durable one. Mitsubishi cars are one of the best and top cars..
I would suggest considering a Hundayi (I know I spelled that wrong, sorry). Anyways, they're inexpensive, get great gas mileage and they have still have the best warranty on the market. This is because the manufacture is trying to build a good reputation. They're not the most popular cars but my sister has an Accent and it has been great for her.
For low insurance and low running costs Renault Clios take some beating, a 2002 onwards model should cost around £2000-2500 and if you can get the diesel you will get 55mpg.

Reliable and easy to drive, not good if you carry adults in the back for long journeys but just the two of you - great
i would go with a vw .there great on milige,looks,room&affordable.t. model should be up to you but make sure you get the diesel tdi. they still get the great diesel milige. the great part is there speed is the same as the gas models. and if your eviorment friendly biodiesel is becoming a very big hit.
i would recommend a used subaru. they are decent on gas, plenty of cargo room in the wagons, and reasonably cheap, for the quality anyways. they withstand accidents extremely well and are very reliable. subarus are known to go well over 200000 miles without any major problems.
i have a 99 subaru and it has withstood my abuse for over four years very well. im a rather aggressive driver so im happy with it. plus, they drive really well in the snow.
i bought it used for seven grand and it had under 90k miles on it.

it has over 150k miles on it now and it still runs like new.
a high mileage ex lease car
corsa,Peugeot 206,ford ka,fiesta,focus or escort.vauxhall astra,nissan micra,almera,smart for two,for four,madza 323,3,citroen saxo,peugeot 106 306,yaris,suzuki swift,honda jazz,civic,bmws mini,rover 25,45renault clio,megane to name just a few
