Why do they still use Dennis Dart single deck busses in central London?

My partner is a bus driver and drives these in bolton.He thinks they are nippy little buses,but inadequate on a busy route.He works for arriva north west.He likes the dennis darts and would drive them all day.Have a look at the links.he doesnt know the answer,I think its being tight on the pocket,saving money on buying new buses.The buses here are always breaking down.He says the dennis dart is easier to manouvere in a busy enviroinment.hope this helps.excuse any mistakes,had wine

TFL have been converting busy routes to double-deck (or Mercedes-Benz Citaro G artics) over the last few years as ridership has risen. Originally in the 1990s Darts (with MCW/ Optare Metroriders and van derived minibuses) were used to increase route frequencies which had been cut in the 1970s. In quieter & suburban areas of London the Dart is probably _still_ the right size, and is about to go into a new version. Personally I find the 4 Cylinder Dart rather unrefined, with a nasty resonance whilst idling, I'd take the 6-cylinder Optare Solo any time. However nothing rides as badly as the Mercedes-Benz Vario, count yourself lucky there are very few of those still left in London.
