Range Rover Sport - Warranty? (Gearbox fault).?

I have recently purchased a Range Rover sport (used - 8 months old) from my local Land Rover Dealer, which transfered the remaining manufacturers warantee for my ownership.
It ran perfectly, however upon returning from holiday, the battery was flat (which a friend jump-started). After then a warning code was present & the car was lacking in power. The local garage said that the gearbox was stuck in 1st gear (its automatic, petrol version). I took it to Land Rover who said that I had somehow caused this by jump-starting it & are reluctant to warrant the fault. I feel that i am not taken serious because of my age (19). They say that this is a computer fault - but how can that effect gears? Are they conning me? Should they warrant it?
I am a complete novice & would love advice or to hear how similar problems with Land Rover were resolved. I love the car, but feel let down by the after service - What do you think?

If your friend use jumper cables to get your car started he/she might have touched one of the leads to the computer that controls the gear select mechanisms. Yes, they use computers for that if it's all electronic select. In that case, they can legitimately deny a warranty claim because the defect was not due to materials or workmanship on their part but due to misuse.

The only way you can check up to see if the fault is in the computer is to have it analyzed by someone with the right equipment.

You could possibly get the dealership to fix the problem if you can convince them that any misuse was unintentional and that you would prefer to continue to deal with them. However, they know that they have you over a barrel because if you have unauthorized repairs carried out (by a non-approved technician), it can void your warranty.

My best advice: Check with a Range Rover/Land Rover club to see if
a) they can maybe help you get the warranty claim dealt with fairly -- maybe on at least a reduced cost;

b) help you find a reliable, approved technician who can fix it for you if that doesn't work out.

Car clubs -- especially one-make ones -- are usually very helpful and worth joining.

Good luck
Wake up!
They are probably correct in that the jump starting messed up the computer..New stuff runs almost entirely through the computer. However, it was not your fault (was it??) that the battery went dead. If you didn't do something like leave the lights on, there is probably another defect that you're going to have to deal with.

If the battery wasn't YOUR fault, then THEY should fix the computer. Insist that they do.I think you have a good case and if you stay on them, they'll eventually fix it. I hear that LR gives lots of problems like this.
I will never understand why people continue to buy Land Rovers and Range Rovers. Great piles of crap. Even the law are starting to shy-away from them going for Japanese and BMW 4x4s. Land/Range Rover service has always been crap, and probably always will be. Even Ford (who own Land Rover) haven't really made the vehicle or the service aspects any better than they used to be in the British Leyland days in the 70s
congrats. You now have the one of the two least reliable vehicles in production. The other is a landrover LR3. this is based on the recent top 5 least relaible vehicles published on Yahoo news. Your Rover even beat the Tourag and Lincoln Navigator for more major mechanical failures per 1000 in the first 3 years. SWEET! Wonder why people in third world countries no longer buy Landrovers?

BTW, I think they are jerking you around. Just hope the sunroof doesn't leak. The seats are made of fiberboard which collapse when wet. I have seen it happen in the back bench of a Defender in a rain storm. LMOA, glad it wasn't mine.
um why are you posting this in a jeep section why dont you post it in a land rover or who ever makes those pieces of crap you would probably get a better and more first handed answer.
Jump starting a Land Rover improperly can lead to more problems than this website allows. Sorry about your Land Rover dealer not taking you seriously. Most 19 year olds can't afford such an expensive machine. But that doesn't matter. The fact is Land Rover has a 4 year warranty. Demand that they repair the PROBLEMS YOU ARE EXPERIENCING RIGHT NOW and don't tell them anything else. Retain all of your reciepts and keep a file. If you feel that your delearship is brushing you off, your warranty applies to other dealerships around the world as well. Good luck and don't give up.
