Do you have a Ford Fiesta 1.3?
Normally, in other cars when their engines are hot the fan switches on automatically and you can hear it.
I have not heard the one in my car, is this normal? The signs in the dashboard seem fine and never show the temperature high. Also, I have checked the coolant and is ok.
Can you tell me if this is normal? is it a quiet fan?
Answers:
A quick and easy test is to 'short' the radiator thermostatic switch.
Ensure your engine is off, hand-brake on and bonnet up :¬) then find the switch on the side of the radiator (check your Haynes manual to be sure) unplug the switch lead and then join the terminals (this is essentially what the thermostatic switch does) either with a short lead or a piece of bent wire.
if your fan is OK it will start running - if not then you'll need to replace it. If your car is not running hot that's all there is to it !
But if you're still worried then you can do another test if you're OK with the possibility of having to refill your radiator and cooling system.
If your fan runs OK the next thing is to check the switch itself. Either leave the car running, parked, for about 15-30mins or you can remove the switch, but keep it attached to it's lead, and immerse it in a cup boiling hot water. Either method should trip the switch and activate the fan - if not, the switch is duff.
The only problem is that removing the switch will drain the radiator unless you're really quick with a bung ! And quick with the switch when you put it back !
:¬)
This is completely normal, the fan is quiet, and yes we have one of these cars!!
..If you really want to test it's working correctly. Start the engine and let it run for around 10-20 minutes. Open the bonnet and watch to see if the fan starts workin, keep an eye on the temperature gauge too. Good luck
I did have one when I was in the UK and it was a fine car for what it was made to do. Just keep an eye on the engine temp light. But as long as you're moving it probably won't turn on (it turns on mainly at stoplights.
I take it you car came with a hand book, I suggest you consult it,
I'm no mechanic, but I bet your car was born with a silent fan.
If its not running hot its ok
go and drive the car for 20 mins then park it up and leave running the fan will cut in after a while, even when it does the gauge wont go up that much above normal.
if the gauge climbs and no fan then possibly the switch is not working, check your water level before you do this.
Ya normal. Thanks 4 answerin my bad feelin question!
