Help! why does my vw golf's engine keep cutting out when i drive through a puddle?

I have a 1997 mark three golf, had nothing but problems with it,: ( but the main one is whenever it drives in the wet, the engine will stop, mainley after going through a puddle, it is a auto but it feels like when you stall a geared car, any ideas?

sounds like the insulation is breaking down whenever it gets water around it. I would invest in a new set of HT leads and remove the distributor cap when they are being fitted to make sure everything is clean and no apparent cracks. Check the carbon pick up in the cap is OK. Replace cap fit new leads (5) and give them a good spray with a water repellent aerosol.

basically the height of mark three golf is too low so there are chances of water logging in your cars engine and second get a car base sheet installed in your car for avoiding it to happen again
Something in the ignition system becomes wet. Pep Boy's type stores sell a weather proofing spray that you can apply.

Same thing happened to me w/ my last car..they thought it was my distributer cap as well so they replaced that and all of the plugs and i still had the same problem..finally they realized that the wire harness was getting wet so they rewired that and the problem went away
Waters getting in the under bonnet (hood) electrics use a waterproof ignition sealant spray on them
join vw assistance give it 24 hours then call them out, they will come believe me i worked there the technicians are really good but join now because they wont join you up if the car over 10 yrs old

your altenator is on the lower side of the motor. when you drive through a puddle it is getting wet check with your local dealer they had a recall for this problem a few years ago
try a new disributor cap its cheap and should be very easy to fit.make sure when you take the ht leads of they go on the same way as you took them of the old one as this is the way your car fires up
