99-03 bmw 5 series worth buying?? any problem/faults?
Answers:
As always, stay away from the earlier models. The 97-00 automatic trans' reliability is spotty. Some trans had to be rebuild at 70k miles, soon after the warranty runs out. As with all BMWs, get a stick if you know how to drive one.it's more fun.
The 01-03 E39 5-series are excellent cars, but prepare to pay a little more because the resale value is very good, so these cars command top market values. They have resolved their automatic trans problems by 2000. The best model to get, in my opinion is the 530i. If you can afford it and the gas prices don't scare you, go for the 540i (4.4L V-8). Whatever model you get, try to get one with sports package option. They started offering this package in 2000 and is well worth the money. Stiffer suspension, traction control, stiffer sway bars, and beefier tires and wheels.
From reports shown the series 3 is the best model. 525 sport may be a bit large on the insurance front. Id would look around if interested in buying one and be prepared to venture out of your local area as prices vary. My dad had a 744 and it was a treat. He has now upgraded to the new 7 series. BMWs are way better than Mercs
Get it checked by out the Rac' or some organisation like that as any replacement parts and labour will cost you dearly .. but they seldom have any trouble before the first 120,000 miles then it's selling time. go for it you'll wonder how you drove anything else.
In July I picked up my very first BMW - after consulting all the gurus -- I found myself with a 330i. I was warned away from Series 5 - but for reasons that were suited to me. The car is bigger than a series 3. Also, my 330 came with a warrantee to January of 2009 - and all labor, parts, (brake pads, rotors, oil changes) are part of the package deal I landed.
I was told by a few mechanics I know - that if I had a 5 and it went off warrantee - I wouldn't be able to afford the maintenance - it comes out much higher than then 3 series.
Good luck with the car - no matter what - I'm sure you'll enjoy driving it.
Just put through my p reg 520i 95,000 miles through mot. Minor lighting fault only.
Only cost this year except routine work. Same last year. Not bad value when it cost me £5000.
I wouldn't buy a 525 sport. The 5 series isn't a sporty car. You could try a 3 series.
