Any car mechanics out there?

Got a P reg clio.It squeks when it starts.I thought it would be the fan belt but a friend has said that newer clios dont have them.I'm now worried that it might be more serious. Can anyone advise?

Hello yes your Clio has a belt that drives your alternator to check if this is your problem start car switch on all your lights and heated rear screen then put your foot on accelerator pedal bring your eng rpm up to 4000 rpm if you hear a loud squeal its the belt slipping it just needs tension up.Make sure your car is in neutral.Regards Mick work on Renault's.
Fan belt or a rat in engine bay.
I have been around cars all my life. I am almost 55 years old, I don't understand your question!
i think every car has a fan belt, all he belt does is go to the alternator which charges the battery, and that is probably just a bit worn on its way out or just a little loose, the belt will cost under a tenner and you could get it fitted for about 20, good luck
Well, if it sqeaks for a while and stops when you rev up the engine chances are is the drive belt, not the fan belt. Newer cars don't use a fan belt ( as your frind might have suggested).

Squeak sound comes from a belt, the engine belt. Go to your local parts store and buy a belt dresser can . ( like $ 3 can ) spray out your belt and try it.

If it is more serious then you need the belt replaced or .
it could be a dry spigot bearing in the gearbox
It's going to be a belt of some description
Hi,

Fan belts were so called because they drove the fan that cools the radiator but since nowadays fans are often driven electrically the belt only drives the alternator and the water pump so they are often referred to as drive pulleys or alternator pulleys. When the car starts a lot of current is drained from the battery causing a heavier current to flow through the alternator, in order to replenish the battery charge. This heavy alternator current resists the turning of the alternator, where there is misalignment or improper adjustment of the alternator belt it can slip, causing the squeak you describe and adversely wearing the belt.
Power steering pump belt. I bet its worse when its cold and wet outside. Replace the belt and spray dressing on the new one before installing it.
It could still be the fan belt. Belt driven fans died out many years ago, but all the other things that the belt drives (alternator, power steering, water pump, A/C etc) are still there, so the name fan belt has stuck. So, if its loose it will still squeak. The proper name for it is FEAD, or Front End Accessory Drivebelt.
