When replacing a steering rack, should you also renew the bushes?

My local VW Service garage has told me that when they change the steering rack on my 1992 VW T4 (with power steering), they must also change the 4 bushes. Is this really neccessary?

Answers:
this is always a good idea as they take a lot of stress and strain over the years and you could end up with a rattle in the steering and sloppy steering, they are relativly cheap and should not cost any extra for labour
Yea it would be best off to have them changed when you change a steering rack. Bushes are only rubber and the first part to wear is the bushes. Plus its easierand cheaper to change them while its all apart rather than changing the rack then changing the bushes 6 months later.
Ummm..do you mean bushings?

If so, this is not strictly necessary, but it is a good idea. Bushings are cheap, the labor to replace them is not, and the rack will be out anyway. We call this "preventative maintenance". You will not be sorry.

Depending on the vehicle's specs, replacement of the bushings may be mandatory, due to the (possible) damage done to the bushings during the R&R (remove and replace) process.
yes it is necessary it's for safety reason
You should also change the bushes even though it is not a must because in reality, due to wear and tear, your steering rack has got to be replaced. This means, due to wear and tear, your bushes are also worn out already and therefore have got to be replaced. However, if you're sure that the bushes are still in a good condition or not badly worn out, you need not replace them.
Absolutely. Old worn bushings can play havoc with steering and handling, the new rack may also wear faster. Those saying yes are absolutely on target.
Also, it will be cheaper labour wise to get it all done at once.

But seriously, changing all is all but an absolute.
They are not overselling you on this.
yes for sure, because for good handling like new car. damaged bushes may cause ur handling running poor.
If you ran over the bushes when your stearing collom broke you should replace them before your wife noticed them missing or you will never hear the end of it!
yes ! always when dealing with safety critical systems and components do the job properly
