Citroen xsara warning light, I have no manual!?

Hi, my citroen xsara has been under the 'carful' care of my partner for one day. He's just rung up to say the engin sounds awful and the engin warning light has turned on and the display is saying a number 3. The car came without a manual so I have no idea if this is a simple fault or a major problem!
Can anyone tell me what this means please? Its a 51 plate by the way.

your engine is short of water and overheating. the are 2 sensors for the cooling system, the water level and temperature.. if it contiues to overheat you have a leak and you may blow the cylinder head gasket. also check the oil level !!

PS have you checked the car for oil its one of the main reasons for for a car running awful and the warning light coming on good luck
