Cars & Motoring If there is movement in the mcpherson strut?
Answers:
McPherson strut does not have an upper arm but it does have an upper mount bush which can have movement and are replaceable, without replacing the strut. The steering rack ball joint sounds to me like track rod end, and this is most likely culprit in the vehicle pulling to the left and causing uneven wear on the tyres, depending on the vehicle these jobs can take anything from 1 hours to 3 hours to do, but normally quite a quick job, get a couple of quotes for the work before getting it done, also when it's been done have the wheel alignment (tracking) checked if the garage who do the job cannot check it themselves.
you should not have to replace the strut it should be mounted on rubber bushes, with it pulling to the left it could be tyre pressure, brakes binding, tracking try and get at least 2 garages to have a look and get 2 quotes for any work.
Michelle Saint is correct you do not have an upper arm with a McPherson strut. You do not need to replace the complete strut the part that wears screws into the housing. The top bearings that it pivots on are replaceable.Te steering rack ball joints if worn can be replaced.Do not take it to a quick fit or similar depot they get commission on what they sell and tend to replace more than necessary.Get a written QUOTE before work is started Regards MIck UK>
