Vauxhall corsa clutch problem?
Do I need a whole new clutch or can you just replace the plates inside it?
Answers:
Take no notice of the American numpties on here who know nothing about manual cars.
You probably need a whole new clutch. That will comprise a clutch cover, a clutch plate, and a release bearing. The gearbox will need to be removed, the new parts fitted, and everything put back together, and you should be OK.
Clutch Kit about £50 plus however much labour you get charged for the fitting.
Have you tried adjusting the cable this sometimes helps, gives you a bit more time.
WTF do you live? Is this an automatic transmission or a manual?
If it is a manual transmission, you have a clutch disc, not plates.
In the USA it costs about $300-500 to replace a clutch and pressure plate IF you dont get hammered by dealership prices.
If it is an automatic tranny, you are looking at $1000-2000 usually.
Nobody will just go in and replace a clutch pack. There is so much time involved in pulling the tranny, disassembly, and reinstallation that the cost of parts and labor for a total rebuild is little more.
As far as adjustment, it is seldom that adjustment will take care of a slippage problem. Adjustment normally controls where the pedal engages the clutch, but if the clutch plate or disc is worn or oil wet, it will do no good. You can try it. Get a manual for this car or take it to a mechanic to see if adjustment will help.
Your worst case scenario is if you have a leaking rear main seal or similar. This will allow oil to contaminate the clutch and it will NEVER be right unless you fix the leakage.
If it is a simple wear problem, this is relatively simple to repair.
Its not worth just replacing the clutch plate a clutch kit for a Corsa is about 95 pounds.plus fitting.Mick.
You are better fitting a whole new clutch there is no need to remove the gearbox on theses cars a special tool can be bought for around £10 + about £50 for the clutch its a very easy job to do even if you have only limited mechanical knowledge If you have to take it to a garage they should not charge more than one hours labour
