Gas turbine engines. Many of these are within 3-4% of the maximum efficiency that the laws of thermodynamics predict such an engine can have. Piston engines don't come anywhere close to those limits.

The high compression needed to make a diesel engine work properly actually give it the high degree of deficiency.
Any 2 stroke engine..try running a 4 stroke engine upside down and see what happens..a 2 stroke engine has more power,more torque, less engine parts and you can run the upside down (model Aircraft)
