I am looking at a 1997 Honda Prelude 2.2 Vtec Auto in two days time. What are the major problem areas?

Answers:
My parents have owned 4 Hondas and only had to change the oil regularly and put tires on one of them. They are the most dependable cars and hold their value! Honestly, I wouldn't worry, especially if you are buying it from the original owner. Have fun. The Preludes are sharp looking cars! :)
the major problem is that you can't afford a good car
Weak head gaskets so make sure the oil is clean and not a creamy colour
look on Auto trader on the net, you can put the age and make of car in and it will tell you the common problems.
also check in side the rear wheel wells the prelude is notorius for rusting out there the one i had also had a bad balancer shaft seal that i replaced everything else first just to find out that it was a $4 part and ended up costing over $400 in all new gaskets and seals
i bought 1 last week(£400) for hammering about a big yard i work in, it has been driven by allsorts and thrashed within an inch of its life and i rolled it as well and it still running like a dream but looks like ****, great car, quick responsive and reliable..
. . . depends where it's parked, you'll probably find one on a council estate, obviously watch out for CCTV cameras and the Old Bill . . .
as long as the car wasn't abused and depending on how many miles on it it shouldn't be that bad, i have a friend with a 97 honda prelude and it has about 200,000 thousand miles on it, oil changed every 3,000 miles, tire's rotated every oil change, freon or what ever charged every summer, diagnostics ran on it every 2 years and the thing runs like brand new, and looks great still, we took it to a dealership about a month ago and he said that its worth almost what it was brand new..there great strong car if u take care of them.
The Price Of Spare Parts & Service
Stay away from the SH version it has some electronic sterring conrol or somthing that is very expensive to fix and have worked around
