Had a friend with an xr3i same problem it was its auto matic choke you can here itsort of gaging on too much fuel just b4 it dies
Could be injection jets
it's a ford
ER, petrol & a MATCH!
sounds like an ignition control module or ecu
It sounds as thou your automatic choke is sticking on
you may bring it to the garage it could be any thing from air flow meter, crankshaft position sensor, coil pack to faulty distributor. best of luck with it.
I'll tell you whats wrong with your car
ITS A FORD
get a new car
if it still runs well when your razz-in it its the auto choke otherwise its a choke and injection prob
i know on the Galaxy the ECU can cause the vehicle to either be hard to start or to run for a moment and then cut out. ring your Ford dealer..
pls tell me its not white, i had 1 that did that, it was a 1988 e reg, it not fuel, it sumat to do with engine itself
possibly idle air control valve sticking.
I have this on one of my cars i have currently, i know, awful car, a vauxhall vectra.

As being a engineer for most of my life, and from tinkering on many of my cars, i have reason to believe that it is either a problem with the engine idle, or the vacuum hoses. What are you talking about?? Is it expensive??

Well although it sounds complicated, it isnt really, and no it isnt expensive in most cases, but it can be on mondern car engines.

The engine idle, ie the automatic engine choke to prevent the engine from stopping can sometimes be too low, after wear and tear, if its old enough. On older cars you can alter this idle manually, but on newer cars this is all electronic and has to be taken to a dealer.

Vacuum hoses are used to give pressures from the crank shaft and exhaust emission, and many other places on the engine. They blow or suck air, and go to a bellow which then controls another think, like the amount fuel injected and like wise. Just an input and an output. These small vacuum hoses can get clogged or even just blocked slightly, giving a false reading to the bellow, therefore giving a wrong output. This will not bring the engine management light on.
If you are machanically inclined, you can take the vacuum hoses off, and clean them yourself, but if not, id recommend taking it to your dealer.
Some advice when needing to have things done on your car:
Dealers tend to be expensive, and they can be because elderly people and non machinically inclined people have no choice but to go to them if they have a problem with their brand new 1.4 Ford mondeo Ghia or like wise.. But they also give free advice. Have them check what the problem is, and then with their opinion in writing, take the car to a local garage, and have that work done by them, as this way you'll get the job done cheaply, and you wont be paying for things that you dont need doing (that usually happens when you go to a local garage)

Thanks, Ash
