BLOCKAGE IN THE FUEL LINE DIRTY INJECTORS VACUUM PIPE THE LIST IS ENDLESS YOU REALLY NEED TO GET A MANUEL AND GO ONE STEP AT A TIME
Try a new fuel filter. Thats your first and cheapest remedy. If no cure check for vacuum pipe leaks.
check some of the ford owner clubs these guys are buffs and love to answer questions on these cars!
Confirm that you have petrol in the tank.
check for leaks in the system for both fuel and air, drain the filter this can relieve the water caught within the fuel system, when drained tighten up again, check vacuum hose specifically connected to the carb.
If still a problem, change the fuel filter ensuring correct refitting and re-prime. check vent on tank.
check plugs leads and coil. main lead and points.
20 years ago you could bet on it being a faulty capacitor in the distributor! .. (You probably don't even have distributors in cars nowadays!)
Your ford is having a early death, get it fixed or scrap it
your car has no choke so dont worry about that, when it stops you need to establish if it has spark and fuel if both are present but it still wont start then you have electrical fault
it shud av automatic choke, i had a e reg about 7 yrs ago and it did the same thing, i had to have a new fuel tank and fuel lines, and it ran alot better, for some reason some of the tanks rust on the inside, not sure why but then it causes running probs, it sounds like you got some **** in there cos when its been stopped a few mins it runs again, so the **** must be running back down the pipes, but i'm female, so what do i know, just tryin to help
I had this exact problem in my Escort XR3-i about 6 years ago. It had been parked up for a while, and I know this sounds dumb, but a bird had made a nest in the exhaust. The car would start and run for a couple of minutes and then as the gas built up, the engine choked up and died. It took ages to find the problem and we only found it cos one of my mates made a joke, but seriously - check your exhaust!
