As I understand it it is a requirement of of all things the Geneva convention. The little GB on the new style numberplate is not sufficient and there have been stories of French cops issuing on the spot fines for failing to display the proper GB plate. All EU countries have their own laws regarding what must be carried in a car, for example in Austria chains for snow. I'd find the website of the tourist board of the countries you intend to visit and inquire as to what their rules are.
Get yourself a new number plate and you're in the clear. You do have to carry a triangle (that's an old one - 20 years at least). The triangle should be in the body of the car, not in the boot (incase after a shunt you can't open it) and not at the front if your car is rear-engined (incase you have shunted).A flourescent waistcoat is also obligatory in Germany and Spain. Better than being mowed down on a motorway.
Just a fine point, but for those who do want to display GB stickers, isn't UK more politically correct.
