Clutch or gearbox problem on golf tdi?
Answers:
It's the gearbox. If the clutch was at fault, the slippage would happen mostly in the high gears rather than the low ones.. the stink from the clutch is because you're burning it pulling away in third! (Surprisingly, that's not how the manufacturer intended you to drive it 9_9)
Either first and second gear have completely gone - probably the internal selector or synchroniser assembly has ceased to function (1st and 2nd are chosen by the same part), or your linkage is out of adjustment. I doubt it's the linkage though, if you're able to put the stick decisively into the proper 1st and 2nd positions; a misalignment would plain prevent you moving the stick into place, and a loose linkage would see you supposedly choosing 1st/2nd (or 5th, reverse) and getting 3rd/4th instead (as seen on a VW I once owned).
You may have to join my brother and bite the bullet in getting it replaced - and have the clutch done at the same time as you have to have the box off to do it (and driving it in 3rd a lot will kill the clutch). He's got an old ford escort where 3rd gear no longer works. puzzled over it for ages (linkage, oil level, etc) and have given up on it simply being broken and needing replacement.
sounds like your clutch has gone my mums went last week but her's was just the cable
If it isn't that old, then it may be the linkage if the shift lever goes into position.
Bad synchro gears usually cause this kind of problem, but it's strange that it does it in 1st and 2nd.
its the clutch thats the problem.. The clutch isn't holding up well for the shifts and thus the gear in the transmission slips a lot.. u might have to replace the clutch.. nothing wrong with the gear box..
gear linkages on the box, it has dropped off leaving you with 3rd and 4th probably, does gear lever feel loose when going sideways ??
If it was a clutch problem then it would happen in all gears. The problem is either the linkage ,as they become worn and make it difficult to position correctly for the selected gear or the gearbox itself,in which case it could be the synchro or something else inside
Get rid of it . It's a mechanic's dream.
not the clutch, but as u slipped it using third it may be knackered.
1st & 2nd gear are on the same shaft in the gearbox it may be gearbox problem.
if it is a mk 4 golf it could be the dual mass fly wheel these are common for going on mk 4 tdi's. hope it is not this as these are priced around £500.
Gear change linkage or adjustment not the clutch otherwise no drive in 3rd gear.Regards \Mick
