They're not compulsory, but they do make a VERY big difference!

Yes ,they improve lateral stability and steering response.
Oh yes. Once you've seen a caravan turned over in the road, you know it is essential. Caravans are stable at a certain speed, go above that and they start to weave.
Without stabilizers your whole steering linkages' would fall to the ground. What a question.
not if the caravan is load correctly and driven in a reasonable manner.
