might-be something on site to help you,
but from what i can remember tom to majorp has more or-less got it right
seatbelts but no helmet
no helmets required for trike in uk but in europe yes you do need to wear helmet for the seat belt some trikes you need a seat belt and some you dont i do not need seat belt for mine reason is if you sit on the trike like a car then you need one if you sit astride the trike like a motorbike then you dont
UK no helmet needed, seat belt wise as a general rule if you sit astride the trike they are not required but if it is fitted with a bech tyoe seat, then belts are required.
If the trike weighs under 410KG and you sit astride it like a motorcycle then you dont need a seatbelt or a helmet.
I am pretty certain that trikes do not need seat belts because the are classed as a "Motorcycle and sidecar" or "Motorcycle sidecar combination" and as such and not required by law to have a seat belt. But you do need a crash helmet. I think most plods wont bother you because of the hassle they would have to go to to get a prosecution. Sense dictates that a helmet would be advisable. The area is pretty grey so a good idea would be to collar a Traffic Plod and see if he could interpreted the exact letter of the law. Also check your insurance policy as the company could have there own rules. Good riding.
Dont need a helmet
if ur trike is a car engine u av to wear a seatbelt, and if ur trike is a m/cycle engine u av to wear an helmet. .. well thats the way i think it is but ive seen a legal registered quad on our local expressway with bike engine but they was not wearing helmets? so there you go, maybe you can teach me?
dont need either, but its your life!
Most of the people answering so far have just about got it right, there are variables to do with wether you sit astride (bike like) or sit like a car. It's irrelevant wether it's a car engine or bike engine and more to do with the weight and layout of the vehicle. Going abroad on one depends on which countries you want to travel through.
If you want a definitive answer on all things trike in this country and the rest of Europe try contacting www.nabd.org.uk
