Why don't owners of 4x4s pay more vehicle licence tax than owners of little cars?

They pay more tax but certainly not enough to cover the crap the spew into the air.
I live in a rural area. They all drive up yer backside when theres snow on the ground thinking they own the bloody road. Most of the time their only used for the school run.

Cause the people who drive them are rich, and rich people are superior people than the rest of us. If they weren't why would they be rich in the first place?

They do, but it depends on the CC of the car in question, most 4x4's have a very high CC and thus pay more road tax, smaller cars, mainly ones below 1600CC pay a lot less. Oddly though if you take for example a Mini Cooper S, this has a similar carbon output as a Discovery, but because the engine is smaller, you would pay less tax.

Well if you paid attention to politics, in the last budget it was announced that 4 x 4 tax is going up from september. I drive one 'cos I want to, and as for taking up 2 parking spaces, I don't, but then I am a woman and can drive properly!
The reason is the US auto industry lobbyists. US car makers have found more profit to date in larger vehicles than small. A tax break for small cars would be portrayed as shifting the playing field to the Japanese and Koreans who know better about small and gas effient cars.

That's the best question I've heard for ages! Why indeed? The question should be sent to the government, but the answer is probably because owners of 4x4s are so rich and arrogant that they don't realise what a menace they are.
they pay more tax cause they cause more damage to the road, so the money should go towards fixing it.

Because our darling labour government has screwed up so badly and they don't want to lose even more votes by annoying the drivers of Chelsea tractors. Its political at the end of the day.
Personally I believe that you should pay more road tax if you own such a vehicle. However, I believe that this tax hike should only be applicable to people who do not need to use such a vehicle, just those that choose to. Essentially there are some people such as farmers, etc that need to drive 4x4's, so they should be offered tax breaks as long as they can prove their need to drive said vehicle. However, no one can justify owning a massively polluting vehicle simply because they have to go to Sainsbury's. Personally, I manage the same job using my prius and cause less pollution to boot.
this is a really stupid a byast question I drive a Land rover because i need to, I never take up 2 spaces and my car is shorter than a mondao, what 4X4 do you mean a fiat panda, Audi quatro all 4X4, also you will use more recourse's with your prius when you change it every 2or3 years my car is now 10 years old and will keep going for at least another 10 years

In Nebraska 4x4's usually pay more tax because there value is worth more than cars.
They all however pay the same licence fee's.
It's not just '4x4's' that pay more - it's anything with a biggish engine. I get humped with road tax - £200+ a year, and it costs me over £70 to fill my tank (400 miles).
If I owned a 1.0 litre 'buzz box' I'd be as miserable as sin with such a sh1+y shopping cart.
Dammit, I deserve a flippin' medal from the government for the amount of tax I pay for the priveledge of just owning a car.
As for parking spaces - it's the GREEDY car park owners that cram in FAR too many bays. If we all owned 'micras' then we'd fit. In one car park, I have a grand total of 4" either side of my car, and the back hangs out by a foot - and I've just got a family saloon..
