What engine oil do i need for the secondhand ford mondeo 1993 i just bought?

as i've been told some oils can't be used, and i don't have a handbook.

Answers:
I'ts probably a semi synthetic oil for that.Your motor parts shop will put you right.
Usually 10W-30 is a safe bet. Unless European oil ratings are different from the numbers they use in the United States.
10/40 not a synthetic oil.
you bought a vehicle without knowing what oil to use?? absofulyuty hilarious!
20w50
10w-30 is a safe bet unless you live somewhere that gets very cold, in which case you should 5w-30. Do not buy store brands or off brands.
Ford used to recommend a specific type of oil for their engines but in view of the age of your car then any reasonable quality oil will be OK. Texaco do a good quality semi synthetic oil for less than £20 for 5 litres which is a bargain.

You ha vent said if the car is petrol or the turbo diesel. If its a TD i would suggest a GTX TD by castrol.

The ford diesel engines last forever by the way 300,000+ miles but around half that for the 1.8 petrol
Castral GTX.. works on everything with a motor.
Get your oil flushed and put the cheapest (ordinary) standard oil available from your service garage. Any mineral based oil is safer to use than Synthetic or Semi. I am recomending NewOil Engine treatment though, but it will never be probably be available in your area for a long time. Check the NewOil site for more information.
Below is a great site for oil information. A normal multi weight oil should do the trick.
I would use either Magnatec or Castrol now have an oil desigened especially for older engines which might be a good idea
I would go for 10W-30. Try also adding a fuel additive to clean out the injectors aswell. You can get them from any good petrol station
