You can take a baby under 2 in your lap for free but you should consider this. you'd never dream of taking the baby on your lap in a car, would you? Nope! You'd strap him into his car-seat so he would be safe in the event of an accident. You should do the same for a flight. While it's not likely that you'll crash, it is possible that you'll hit rough air, and sometimes the rough air can be very rough. I've seen people who were not wearing their seatbelts crack their heads on the seat in front of them or the ceiling/overhead bin when we hit very rough air. And a baby can easily bounce out of your arms if the flying is rough.
Pay for an infant's ticket--- you usually get a discounted fare for young children--- and use the car seat. Your baby will be much safer, and that ought to be worth a couple hundred dollars!
