Why in the u.k. do we have a yellow number plate at the rear and white to the front ?on our motor vehicles?

Answers:
From behind the number plate is illuminated at night, so people can read it, at nighttime your headlights would hit the front number plate so you can read that too
i think it's so you know which way a car is facing??
So you can tell which way the car is facing when it's lights are off.

The number plates are reflective.
Reflective to vehicles behind you in the dark hours.
The reflector theory sounds good.

These plates started in the 60's, a lot of cars had small lights and reflectors then. They gradually overtook the old style white or silver on black plates.

In Sept 1973 they became the standard and it's mandatory to have them on a vehicle registered after then.

Most of Europe also seems to use these colours theses days.
