Why are the registration plates on a car white at the front and yellow at the back?

Answers:
because white is reflective & if it was on the rear Poor old plod
might not be able to read your plate.
so that you know which way a car is facing if its lights are out
It's standard so if a car looks identical from both facings a police officer can tell which end is the front. Also it helps someone work out if a car is driving towards or away from them.
A white light indicates that a car is traveling towards you.

Any reflective suface such as that which the numberplate is made of is considered by law a light source and therefore is not permitted on the rear of the car.
